The 5 Fundamental Operations of a Computer

Input unit:
  • This is the computers link to an external source of data.
  • Before performing any process the computer needs inputs to start the processing of any data.
  • Ex. of input devices: Mouse, Keyboard, etc.
  • Receives and accepts data from these external inputs.
  • Converts these through a driver so that its CPU can read it.
  • Gives it out to further processing.
Output unit
  • The output unit gathers the processed results of a computer.
  • converts these into an acceptable form for the receiving device.
  • Sends them off to the device.
Storage unit
  • Before any processing can start, the information supplied by any type of program or input has to be saved into a storage unit.
  • Ex. of storage units would be a hard-drive or the ROM of a computer.
  • The storage unit stores all data supplied to it by the system.
  • Stores results of processing.
  • The ALU does all mathematical logic processing of the unit

Control unit
  • As the ALU is only there for Control unit controls most part of the computer and decides what should be done with the data of the inputs, outputs and from the ALU.
  • allocates and sends this data to the specified locations.
A modern computer is built up of a multitude of these to increase its power and uses advanced versions to create a polymer of units that have the power needed to run advanced programs.
