3.1.6 Define the terms: protocol, data packet.

  • Protocol:
    • rules/procedures for transmitting data between devices
    • defines structure and how send/received
  • Data Packet:
    • unit of binary data, that can be routed through a network
    • packet formats
      • header = destination, metadata
      • body
      • sometimes footer — parity checking
    • also called datagram
